A three-storey building under construction in Durumi 3 near Gudu Market in Abuja has collapsed, leaving at least five people dead and several others injured.

Emergency officials confirmed that the incident occurred on Saturday morning, with construction workers believed to have been on site at the time of the collapse.

Lere Olayinka, spokesperson to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, said 10 people sustained injuries, while one person was rescued alive after spending more than nine hours trapped under the rubble.

Rescue operations are still ongoing, with emergency responders working to evacuate additional victims suspected to be trapped beneath the debris at the site located around Gaduwa Estate in the Gudu district.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) confirmed that the FCT Minister has directed that all casualties receive free medical treatment.

Earlier, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported four deaths and 12 injuries following its initial assessment of the scene. The agency later confirmed the dispatch of multiple rescue teams after receiving a distress alert shortly after the collapse.

Victims were transported to Asokoro General Hospital for medical attention as search-and-rescue operations continued.
