Nigeria’s Senate President Bukola Saraki has officially dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress after weeks of insinuation.

Saraki who oversaw the defection of 13 senators from the APC last week did not reveal what political party he was switching to.

It is widely believed that he would return to the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party after holding various meetings with senior members of the party.

In a tweet on his official handle, he wrote, “I wish to inform Nigerians that, after extensive consultations, I have decided to take my leave of the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

Saraki has fallen out with the leadership of the APC and has enjoyed a rocky relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Saraki’s defection brings the total number of APC senators to 52.

The leader of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan had earlier said the APC will maintain majority even after Saraki defects.

He said, “out of the 109 senate seats, the APC has 52, the PDP has 50, the ADC has three and APGA has two.

Meanwhile, Governor Ahmed also declared his decision to dump the APC for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ahmed in a a tweet on his twitter handle @AbdulfataAhmed, said: “Following consultations and in response to calls by major stakeholders in the state, I have moved to the PDP as APC can no longer serve as a platform for achieving the aspirations and expectations of my people”.
