The executive governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has released the sum of N382,600 for the payment of outstanding scholarship allowances to ease the economic hardship on students caused by the removal of fuel subsidy.
Malam Bala Isa, Executive Secretary of the Borno State Scholarship Board, made the announcement during a media event in Maiduguri on Saturday.
Isa added that Gov. Zulum made the allowances available to help parents cope with the economic hardship caused by the loss of fuel subsidy.
According to him, the allowances that will help 14,416 students are for the 2021–2022 academic session for state indigenes studying at over 30 universities both inside and outside the state.
“Governor Babagana Zulum has released the sum of N382,600.00 for the continuation of payments of the 2021/2022 outstanding scholarship allowances.
“The students are resuming academics at a time when parents are presently faced with various economic challenges.
“It is believed that this payment of over 300 million naira will go a long way in relieving the burden of student academic demands on their parents,” Mal Isa said.
He went on to say that the governor exhorted the students to be dedicated to their studies and to make good use of their allowances for academic objectives.
He stated that students from medical colleges and engineering faculties would each earn N50,000, while those from core sciences, social and management sciences, and the humanities would each receive N30,000.
Comrade Kyari Ahmed, President of the National Association of Borno State Students (NUBOSS), praised Governor Zulum for releasing the allowances and pledged that the funds would be used for academic reasons.
