A number of Boko Haram fighters have surrendered and renounced their allegiance to the deadly sect on Wednesday in Borno.
It was gathered that the fighters surrendered their weapons and ammunition to security operatives in the Gwoza axis while the leaders and footsoldiers had escaped Jaje within the Sambisa Forest.
Troops attached to Operation Hadin Kai of 192 Battalion stationed on the Gwoza-Limankara road, apprehended the terrorists.
A resident opined that many fighters are forcefully conscripted into the deadly sect at a very young age.
“Despite ISWAP efforts to halt them, over 17,000 members of Boko Haram have surrendered so far,” the source claimed.
The Nigerian military while expressing optimism stated that many more are expected to surrender by the end of 2021.
Troops of the Nigerian army also fought terrorists from the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) near Malam Fatori on Wednesday.
The Shura Council is based in the area near the Niger Republic border, which is one of the terror group’s strongholds.
