The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended four lawmakers for allegedly initiating impeachment moves against the Speaker of the House, Hyacinth Dajoh.

The Benue lawmakers suspended at plenary on Friday included the spokesman of the House, Mr Alfred Berger, representing Makurdi North State Constituency; Cyril Ekong of Oju 2; Abu Umoru of Apa; and Shimawua Terna of Kyan State Constituency.

Following the development, the House reorganised its leadership to include Mr Kennedy Angbo as the new Deputy Majority Leader, Douglas Akya as the Deputy Chief Whip, and Elias Audu as the House’s new spokesman.

Meanwhile, the House began reviewing five commissioner nominations on Friday, with two of them, Ogwu Odeh and Imojime Tiza, to be considered later.

Moving the motion, the Majority Leader, Saater Tiseer, said the affected members were attempting to cause chaos in the Assembly despite a recent vote of confidence passed in the Speaker and Governor Hyacinth Alia.

He said, “On Wednesday, 20 August 2025, the house, in the spirit of unity, passed a vote of confidence in the House leadership and the Governor of Benue State.

“Concerned that barely three days after the House adopted resolutions on this matter on this cause, Hon. Alfred Aondoaver and three others went behind to mobilise other members to cause chaos in the House.”

The motion was adopted during plenary, presided over by the Speaker, and the four members were suspended for six months.
