Atletico Madrid squandered a two-goal lead in a dramatic showdown against Barcelona, suffering a 4-2 defeat at the Estadio Metropolitano.

The loss not only ended their unbeaten home record this season but also dealt a significant blow to their LaLiga title ambitions.

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s remarkable comeback propelled them past Real Madrid to the top of the table.

Coming off a heartbreaking and controversial UEFA Champions League exit to Real Madrid, Diego Simeone’s side initially appeared in control. Barcelona, however, started brightly, with Lamine Yamal striking the post in the opening minutes after combining well with Dani Olmo.

Despite the Catalan side early dominance, it was Atletico who struck first just before halftime. Antoine Griezmann’s precise crossfield ball found Giuliano Simeone, who cleverly set up Julian Alvarez to smash home his 23rd goal of the season.

Despite their possession advantage, Barcelona found themselves trailing 1-0 at the break. The second half began similarly to the first, with the visitors pressing high but struggling to break down Atletico’s disciplined defense.

Atleti then doubled their lead in the 70th minute, capitalizing on an error from Eric Garcia. Griezmann dispossessed the defender, leading to Conor Gallagher setting up substitute Alexander Sorloth for a clinical finish.

Barcelona quickly responded. Just moments later, Inigo Martinez delivered a pinpoint cross to Robert Lewandowski, who controlled the ball expertly before firing past Jan Oblak. The equalizer came soon after when Raphinha’s curling cross found Ferran Torres, who headed home unmarked.

Then, in stoppage time, Hansi Flick’s side sealed the win in heartbreaking fashion for Atletico. Yamal’s long-range shot deflected off Reinildo, wrong-footing Oblak, before Torres struck again in the dying moments to complete the remarkable turnaround.

Atletico’s hopes of completing a league double over League leaders for the first time since 2005/06 were dashed, while Barcelona now turns their attention to a crucial clash with Girona after the international break.
