The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is contemplating to withdraw and destroy Permanent Voter Cards that remain uncollected for a decade. This recommendation was among 208 proposals arising from the commission’s review of the 2023 general elections. The decision resulted from the recurrent issue of unclaimed PVCs, with over six million cards still uncollected as of the 2023 elections, including many issued as long back as 2015. Stakeholders in the post-election assessment recommended that INEC resolve the backlog of uncollected PVCs by instituting a policy to withdraw PVCs that stay uncollected for extended periods, starting with cards issued in 2015.…

The minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, stated that Rivers State cannot afford to have an “imbecile'” as governor. Wike, who spoke at the Ahoada East and Ahoada West PDP End of Year Thanksgiving in Rivers State, made the remark while berating former governor of the state, Celestine Omehia. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, during a visit to Sokoto State, warned civilians harbouring suspected criminals to stop or face the consequences of their actions. Jigawa State governor Malam Umar Namadi has tragically lost his son in a car accident. Abdulwahab Umar Namadi, the first son of the state governor, died in an accident on Thursday. He died after a fatal accident just a day after the death of his grandmother. Hajia Maryam, the mother of Jigawa State governor, died on Wednesday after a brief illness at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) and was buried the same day according to Islamic rites. At least five journalists have been killed in an Israeli strike in the central Gaza Strip, Palestinian TV channel reports. They were reportedly in a Quds Today van parked outside al-Awda hospital, where the wife of one of the journalists was about to give birth, in the central Nuseirat refugee camp. The channel posted a video of what it said was the burning vehicle with “press” signage on the back doors. No fewer than 1,500 prisoners have escaped from a prison in Mozambique, taking advantage of ongoing political unrest triggered by disputed election results, police say. According to police chief Bernardino Rafael, thirty-three people were killed and 15 injured in clashes with guards. About 150 more fugitives have since been recaptured, he added. Protests broke out on Monday in response to Mozambique’s highest court confirming that the ruling Frelimo party, in power since 1975, had won October’s presidential elections. Mrs. Funmilayo Ogunseyi, Naomi Silekunola’s mother and former wife of the Ooni of Ife, has urged President Bola Tinubu and well-meaning Nigerians to intercede in her daughter’s legal troubles.  Silekunola is one of three people brought before the Iyaganku Magistrate Court in Ibadan in connection with a terrible funfair stampede last week that killed 35 children.
