The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has approved a special compensation package for eligible Band A electricity customers affected by poor power supply arising from generation constraints on the national grid between February and March 2026. According to a public notice issued on its social media handles on Thursday, the commission said the directive was introduced following significant generation shortfalls across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, which prevented electricity distribution companies from delivering the minimum service levels guaranteed to some Band A customers in the first quarter of the year. NERC noted that it had issued Directive No. NERC/2026/002 on…
The Oyo State House of Assembly on Wednesday, dismissed proposals and pleas for the state government to engage in negotiations with the bandits who kidnapped teachers and students during the coordinated assault at Ahoro-Esiele in the Oriire Local Government Area of the state on Friday, May 15, 2026. It urged, however, for enhanced rescue efforts to ensure the liberation of individuals taken during the assault. This decision came after an urgent public importance motion presented by the representative of Oriire State Constituency, Johnson Ogundele, during the plenary session, shortly after the House reconvened from the Eid-el-Kabir (Sallah) break. The motion…
The delayed offside flag may soon be obsolete as FIFA introduced new technology for the 2026 World Cup. FIFA is set to implement advanced semi-automated offside technology for video assistant referees (VAR), enhancing decision-making speed and allowing an assistant to raise the flag instead of waiting for a play to develop. An immediate audio notification will be dispatched to the assistant if a player is over 10cm offside. Earlier iterations of the technology used at the Club World Cup and the Intercontinental Cup only alerted officials if a player was more than 50 cm offside. The official will be responsible…
Manchester United have reached a £35m (40.5m euros) agreement with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, indicating their desire for an active summer in the transfer window. Ederson, 26, has yet to undergo a medical, with sources indicating that the transfer is expected to finalize in early July prior to United starting their pre-season training. Following the enhancement of their forward positions last year, United are focusing on central midfield this time. Veteran Brazilian Casemiro has departed the club, and Michael Carrick’s decision not to use Uruguay’s Manuel Ugarte—a £50m purchase from PSG in 2024—highlighted the lack of trust in him…

Coroner Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji set the date on Wednesday after Prof. Taiwo Osipitan, counsel for Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, informed that the Lagos State High Court had ordered a stay of proceedings pending the outcome of the hospital’s judicial review application. The inquest was scheduled to commence hearing before the development. Osipitan stated that Euracare had moved the High Court to challenge the…
Hundreds of foreigners afraid for their lives have sought refuge at community halls in south coast, South Africa, claiming that mobs of locals were going door-to-door telling them to leave the country. Many Malawian and Mozambican nationals told AFP that they had fled their homes over the weekend and spent the night in the mountains and jungle before arriving at small-town community centres. “They said, ‘You are a foreigner; you don’t belong in South Africa, so you must go.'” Mozambican Thomas Vincent Baloyi told AFP in Gansbaai, around 110 kilometres (70 miles) south-east of Cape Town. “I said, ‘No, I…

He made the remarks in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Senior…

Fr. Anthony Odiong, a Roman Catholic priest, was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday after being found guilty of felony sexual assault, according to local prosecutors and representatives of the 19th District Court in Waco, Texas. On Friday, a jury convicted priest Anthony Odiong of one act of first-degree sexual assault and two charges of second-degree sexual assault. On Tuesday, the same panel sentenced him. A months-long investigation in 2024 turned out nine women who claimed Father Odiong sexually molested them while acting as their priest, according to Ryan Calvert, a prosecutor with the McLennan County district attorney’s office.…

![Is Anthony Odiong still a priest after life in prison sentence over rape? Rev. Fr. Anthony Odiong, a US-based Nigerian Louisiana Catholic priest, was arrested in Florida on Tuesday for possessing child pornography, according to law authorities. The suspect is reportedly accused of many other cases of sexual assault. The Waco, Texas, Police Department announced in a Facebook post on Tuesday that officers detained Father Anthony Odiong in Ave Maria, Florida, with assistance from the United States Marshals Service. Waco police announced in March that they had received "credible information" about a sexual assault allegedly committed by Odiong in Texas in 2012. “During the subsequent investigation, a case of possession of child pornography was uncovered,” the police said. The priest was apprehended in Florida by the Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force. The Waco Police Department said that he will be extradited to Texas. Odiong had previously served in the Archdiocese of New Orleans before being removed as priest in December of last year due to controversy over homilies in which he claimed, among other things, that the Catholic Church was being taken over by "the gays." At the time, the priest was also accused of abusive behaviour; a Louisiana lady claimed in U.S. bankruptcy court that Odiong had committed both financial and sexual abuse against her. Prior to joining the New Orleans Archdiocese, Odiong served in at least two Texas parishes. On Tuesday, Waco police stated that during their sexual assault investigation, "the presence of other survivors was revealed." “Multiple women have come forward to tell similar experiences as the sexual assault survivor who reported the initial allegation,” the police department said. “Survivors’ experiences ranged from sexual assault and indecent assault, more commonly recognised as groping, and financial abuse, with some survivors experiencing every element of Anthony Odiong’s manipulation.” The police said they “believe there may be more survivors, and we wish to speak with anyone who [has] had similar encounters” with the priest. The Archdiocese of New Orleans issued a brief news release on Tuesday noting Odiong's arrest in Florida. The archdiocese “encourages anyone with any information to contact law enforcement,” the release said.](https://chronicle.ng/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/ezgif-6-4730550ede.jpg)
