The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has opposed moves to prohibit civil servants from participating in party politics, branding the proposal as unconstitutional and an attack on workers’ fundamental rights. This followed a remark attributed to the Federation’s Head of Civil Service, Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, in which she purportedly underlined that civil servants are not permitted to engage in partisan politics. Walson-Jack issued a circular informing civil officials that public service laws ban them from joining political parties or openly engaging in partisan activity. She emphasised that such limits are intended to protect the civil service’s neutrality, professionalism, and nonpartisanship.…
French President Emmanuel Macron advised European partners on Tuesday not to put their trust in Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he described as “an ogre at our gates”. Macron’s statements come as Russian and Ukrainian Presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky appeared to be on track for a peace meeting following fast-paced talks Monday between Donald Trump and European leaders that focused on the critical topic of long-term security guarantees for Kyiv. “Putin has rarely honoured his commitments,” Macron told the LCI broadcaster. “He has constantly been a force for destabilisation. He has sought to redraw borders to increase his…
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has praised Nigeria’s security agencies for their recent achievements in the fight against terrorism, following the arrest of two key commanders of the Ansaru terrorist group. Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, confirmed the terrorist leaders’ arrests last Saturday. According to Ribadu, the leaders of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan, also known as Ansaru, were apprehended in a “high-risk, intelligence-led, counter-terrorism operation” between May and July 2025. He stated that Mahmud Muhammad Usman, identified as the self-styled Emir of Ansaru, was the coordinator of various terrorist sleeper cells across Nigeria and the mastermind…
Mr Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has denied that the Minister awarded N5 billion in contracts. In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, Olayinka described the assertion as unfounded and urged anyone with evidence to submit official documentation proving such contract approvals. He explained that in December 2023, a bill for approximately N10 billion was given to the minister as unpaid payments for projects completed…
Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Femi Falana has asked the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to demonstrate that they are not terrorist organisations by legal action, following a devastating decision by a Canadian federal court. The court, presided over by Justice Phuong Ngo, rejected Douglas Egharevba’s asylum claim, saying that Nigeria’s two largest political parties “use violence, coercion, and subversion of democratic institutions in their bid to acquire political power.” According to the judgement, both the APC and the PDP are “terrorist organisations” under Canadian law. Falana said in a statement…
