Waziri said Garba Gwarmai of the APC polled 31,472 votes to defeat Yusuf Maigado of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who scored 27,931 votes. Moses Itauma, a British-Nigerian boxer, knocked out Dillian Whyte in the first round of their heavyweight bout. The 20-year-old boxer defeated the 37-year-old veteran fighter barely two minutes into their fight, which was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday. Itauma did not allow Whyte to settle as soon as the ring went, and he quickly turned the 17 years difference between the boxers into an advantage for himself. A wild jab sent Whyte to the ropes early, and with Itauma, noticing that his opponent looked hurt, further unleashed a flurry of punches that sent the older boxer to the…

I will not disappoint them,” he said.…
Sunderland made a winning start to their first Premier League campaign since 2016-17 as they deservedly beat West Ham at a raucous Stadium of Light. Eliezer Mayenda, who scored in the Championship play-off final in May, nodded substitute Omar Alderete’s delivery into the corner shortly after the hour mark to spark wild scenes of jubilation among the home supporters. It was another play-off hero who doubled Sunderland’s lead as Dan Ballard – who rescued Regis le Bris’ team in the semi-final first leg against Coventry – guided his header into the corner. And Wilson Isidor put the icing on the…
Luis Diaz marked his Bayern Munich debut with a goal and Harry Kane also scored to help the Bundesliga champions beat Stuttgart and win the German Super Cup. Diaz celebrated a winning start to his career in Germany, having joined Vincent Kompany’s side from Liverpool this summer for £65.5m on a four-year deal. The Colombia winger headed home from Serge Gnabry’s cross in the 77th minute to double Kompany’s side lead. England captain Kane had broken the deadlock in the first half, taking advantage of a poor clearance to slide the ball into the bottom corner. Jamie Leweling pulled a…
Air Canada has suspended flights after more than 10,000 cabin crew commenced strike over pay and ground-time compensation. The airline said the strike, which began in the early hours of Saturday, is expected to disrupt the travel plans of about 130,000 passengers daily, BBC reports. The airline added that all operations, including its budget arm, Air Canada Rouge, had been halted, while advising customers not to head to the airport unless booked on a different carrier. However, flights operated by Air Canada Jazz, PAL Airlines, and Air Canada Express remain unaffected. The report said at least 500 flights are expected…
Newcastle failed to score without wantaway striker Alexander Isak as they were held by 10-man Aston Villa. Villa played the final 24 minutes plus stoppage time with 10 men after Ezri Konsa was dismissed but with Isak missing – as he tries to force a move to Liverpool – the Magpies were unable to find a winner. Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon wasted their best chances during a dominant first half. Debutant Marco Bizot made a fine save to deny new £55m winger Elanga inside three minutes before Gordon planted a free header over. The forward, playing centrally in place…
Yiaga Africa has asked President Bola Tinubu to publish the names of potential candidates for the position of chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and subject them to public scrutiny before screening by the national assembly. Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC chairman, will step down in October after serving the maximum two terms, totalling 10 years, while about 10 national commissioners will also leave office before the 2027 elections. Speaking on Friday during a roundtable discussion on “Safeguarding the Independence of INEC”, Samson Itodo, executive director of Yiaga Africa, said the transitions “would perhaps make INEC weaker and also…

The Financial Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State, Nasiru Yahaya Isa, has resigned from his position and membership of the party, citing persistent internal crises, lack of internal democracy, and worsening factional divisions. In a resignation letter dated August 11, 2025, and addressed to the PDP State Chairman, Isa said his decision stemmed from “deep concerns over the persistent crises within our party, which have made it increasingly difficult for me to continue in this role with the integrity and commitment it demands.” Isa, a former Permanent Secretary in Sokoto State and founder of the Danfilinge…
