The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week warning strike over dissatisfaction with the federal government’s response to its demands. Chris Piwuna, ASUU president, addressed the press on Sunday at the union’s headquarters at the University of Abuja. Piwuna said the strike would begin on October 13 and would be observed across all branches of the union nationwide. He said the strike became necessary after several failed attempts to get the government to address long-standing issues affecting public universities. On October 8, Tunji Alausa, the minister of education, had appealed to the union to shelve its planned…
In a bizarre twist of love and desperation, a 60-year-old man from Guadeloupe robbed a supermarket at gunpoint not for money, but to get arrested and join his grandson in prison. The former firefighter, who had no criminal record, entered a Sainte-Rose supermarket last month wearing a balaclava and holding a weapon. After demanding cash, he calmly helped himself to a slice of Emmental cheese and a bottle of wine before strolling back to his car right in front of the police station. Officers quickly apprehended him. According to his lawyer, Léa Le Chevillier, the man’s motive was heartbreakingly simple.…
A Nigerian paediatrician, Dr Ayobola Adebowale popularly known as Your Baby Doctor has clarified that menstruation (light bleeding) in newborn baby girls shortly after birth is completely normal and nothing to panic about. In a recent social media video, Adebowale explained that the condition, called neonatal menstruation, happens due to hormonal changes immediately after delivery. “Your newborn baby can actually menstruate — and that’s what we call pseudo menstruation,” she said. “It occurs because while inside your womb, your baby was exposed to your hormones. When she’s born, the sudden withdrawal of those hormones triggers mild bleeding, just like menstruation.”…

A single stolen iPhone has helped British police crack open what they call the country’s biggest-ever operation against mobile phone theft, an international crime ring that trafficked tens of thousands of stolen devices from the UK to China. Eighteen suspects have been arrested after months of coordinated raids across London and Hertfordshire, the Metropolitan Police confirmed. Officers recovered more than 2,000 stolen iPhones and dismantled a smuggling network believed to have shipped up to 40,000 devices a year.
