Hassan Ya’u, a 42-year-old maize and sesame seed farmer from Katsina state in Nigeria, was tending to his crops early this month when dozens of armed men on motorbikes approached his plot and began shooting at close range. Ya’u and fellow farmer Musa Nasidi escaped, but the attack murdered at least 50 people, many of whom were farmers working in their fields at the time. The Lagos State Ministry of Health has reported 29 deaths and 579 cases since the cholera outbreak began two weeks ago. Speaking on Monday during an ongoing press briefing, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, explained that the death rate was due to patients being presented late at the hospital or brought in dead.
