Twitter has pledged to “fully comply” with India’s new internet regulations, caving in a dispute with the government over rules that critics say curtail privacy and free speech. The US social media giant has appointed an interim chief compliance officer, will name a grievance officer by July 11 and set up an India office in eight weeks, a lawyer for the company told the Delhi High Court on Thursday. These are some of the requirements under Intermediary rules issued by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in February. Facebook, WhatsApp, Google and others have already made the appointments and started generating…

You’ve got to like social media. It’s a fascinating space for you to laugh, be amazed and also to learn how the human mind works. One thing that intrigued me in the last week was the attention drawn to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s umbrella and power bank. The argument for and against also provided a curious social experiment for those of us in the social sciences but this brief is not about what was said and what wasn’t, it is simply about analyzing the body language of Osinbajo and why this should be a good study going forward. Not many…
Last Sunday, dozens of Muslim women in India found they had been put up for sale online. Hana Khan, a commercial pilot whose name was on the list, told the BBC she was alerted to it when a friend sent her a tweet. The tweet took her to “Sulli Deals”, an app and website that had taken publicly available pictures of women and created profiles, describing the women as “deals of the day”. The app’s landing page had a photo of an unknown woman. On the next two pages Ms Khan saw photos of her friends. On the page after…

Barty won the first 14 points to take early charge in a 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 win on the 50th anniversary of idol Evonne Goolagong Cawley’s maiden win here. Czech Pliskova settled in the second set, rediscovering her big serve before errors crept back in the third. Barty sealed her second Grand Slam title when Pliskova netted a backhand. “This is incredible,” said Barty, who is the first Australian woman to win the Wimbledon singles title for 41 years. “I…
Taliban officials said on Friday the Sunni Muslim insurgent group had taken control of 85% of territory in Afghanistan, and international concern mounted over problems getting medicines and supplies into the country. Afghan government officials dismissed the assertion that the Taliban controlled most of the country as part of a propaganda campaign launched as foreign forces, including the United States, withdraw after almost 20 years of fighting. But local Afghan officials said Taliban fighters, emboldened by the withdrawal, had captured an important district in Herat province, home to tens of thousands of minority Shi’ite Hazaras. Torghundi, a northern town on…
