A group of 97 US tech companies have filed a legal document stating that President Trump’s immigration ban affects their operations and “inflicts significant harm” on business. The 97 signatories include Apple, Facebook and Microsoft but not Amazon or Tesla. The document is an amicus brief, which allows parties not directly involved in a case but who feel they are affected by it, to give their view. It was filed in Washington on Sunday. President Trump’s executive order halted the entire US refugee programme for 120 days, indefinitely banned Syrian refugees and suspended permission to enter the US for all…

Cameroon came from behind to beat Egypt 2-1 and seal a fifth Africa Cup of Nations in a thrilling, edgy final. Substitute Vincent Aboubakar swept in the winner two minutes from time, flicking the ball over defender Ali Gabr and thumping it home. Nicolas Nkoulou had earlier equalised for Cameroon, rising highest to power home a header on the hour mark. The equaliser cancelled out Mohamed Elneny’s opener on 22 minutes with a beautifully taken near-post strike. Underdogs Cameroon had already upset the odds to reach the final and stunned the much-fancied Egyptians with the late dramatic winner from Aboubaker,…

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday asked parliament to extend his medical leave, his office said in a statement, after he took two weeks off for medical checks in Britain. Buhari’s extended leave could hurt already-shaky confidence in his administration amid criticism that the government is gripped by inertia. “President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the National Assembly today, February 5, 2017, informing of his desire to extend his leave in order to complete and receive the results of a series of tests recommended by his doctors,” the statement said. “The President had planned to return to Abuja this evening,…

He had earlier insisted that the protest will go on as planned since, according to him, it is meant to tell Nigerian leaders the need to ‘connect with the people’. He said:…

The ban targeted people from seven mainly Muslim countries. State lawyers had argued it was unconstitutional and discriminatory. The federal judge in Seattle had ruled against government lawyers’ claims that states did not have the standing to challenge Mr Trump’s executive order. On Twitter Trump described the ruling as ‘opening up the US to potential terrorists’. “The judge opens up our country to potential terrorists and others that do not have our best interests at heart.…
Civil society group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sent an open letter to the US President Donald Trump urging his “Administration to attach and release to Nigeria some $500 million worth of US-based proceeds of corruption traced to former Nigerian dictator General Sani Abacha.” The organization said that, “these proceeds are separate from the $480 million of Abacha-origin funds that have been forfeited to the US under an August 2014 US federal district court order. SERAP’s request is fully consistent with the UN Convention Against Corruption, which both the US and Nigeria have ratified.” SERAP in the letter…
