Leicester City kept Atletico Madrid within reach as they restricted the dominant Spaniards to a single goal in their Champions League quarter-final first leg. Koke had already hit the visitors’ post in the first half when the referee judged Marc Albrighton’s foul on Antoine Griezmann had been inside the penalty area. Replays showed contact was made outside the box but Griezmann duly stepped up to send Kasper Schmeichel the wrong way. Fernando Torres slipped as the goal beckoned in the second half but, that chance apart, Atletico struggled to carve out clear-cut openings against a stubborn Leicester defence. Robert Huth…
Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Monaco earned a vital 3-2 lead in their Champions League quarter-final first leg at Borussia Dortmund. The match was rescheduled from Tuesday night following explosions near Dortmund’s team bus, which saw defender Marc Bartra receive surgery on his wrist, though Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel admitted before the game his team needed more time to prepare themselves. Fabinho put a penalty wide after 17 minutes after Mbappe was brought down by Sokratis, but Mbappe himself put Monaco ahead two minutes later from close range, though he was in an offside position. Sven Bender headed into his…
Cristiano Ronaldo ended a seven-month Champions League goal drought as holders Real Madrid came from behind to beat 10-man Bayern Munich in the first leg of their quarter-final in Munich. Ronaldo, the Champions League’s record goalscorer, scored twice in the second half to end an 11-hour wait for a goal and put the 11-times winners in charge. Arturo Vidal had headed Bayern ahead but then wasted a chance to double their lead when he blasted a penalty over the crossbar. And Ronaldo then twice clinically converted from crosses either side of Javi Martinez’s red card to move to 97 Champions…

Prosecutors are treating the blasts as a terror attack but say the precise motive is unclear at present. Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday said the attack was “an appalling crime” and praised the fans of both teams for coming together. A spokeswoman for Germany’s federal state prosecutor in Karlsruhe, Frauke…
