A forgotten city thought to date back as far as the 10th century AD has been uncovered by a team of archaeologists in eastern Ethiopia. Artefacts from Egypt, India and China have been found in the city in the Harlaa region. The archaeologists also uncovered a 12th Century mosque which is similar to those found in Tanzania and Somali land. Russia’s defence ministry is investigating whether one of its air strikes in Syria killed the leader of the Islamic State militant group (IS). The ministry said an air strike may have killed Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and up to 330 other fighters on 28 May. It said the raid had targeted a meeting of the IS military council in the group’s de-facto capital of Raqqa, in northern Syria. There have been a number of previous reports of Baghdadi’s death. Nigeria plans to auction 140 billion naira ($460 million) in bonds on June 21, the Debt Management Office said on Friday. The debt office will sell 40 billion naira of bonds due in 2021 and 50 billion naira each of bonds due in 2027 and in 2037, using a Dutch auction system. Settlement is expected the day after the sale. The bonds are re-openings of previous issues. Two civilians have been killed in a suicide attack in Cameroon’s restive Far North, an area regularly targeted by Boko Haram jihadists, local sources told AFP early Friday.
