Brutal attacks on schools in Nigeria has been described as the second most brutal by a recent study released on Thursday only behind war-torn Yemen. More than 12,700 attacks, including bombings, arson and violent repression of education-related protests, took place between 2013 and 2017, the New York-based Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA) said. With some 21,000 students and teachers injured or killed in attacks on schools globally over the last five years, the study condemns a rise in violent assaults on education. The Senate has appealed the nullification of the suspension of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday. Nigerian troops have killed eight bandits in an exchange of gunfire in Maru Local Government area of Zamfara, Northeast Nigeria. Soldiers of the One Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Gusau were carrying out clearance operations in the state nicknamed “Operation Idon Raini” when they encountered the bandits. The gap between Nigerian banks’ bids to buy and sell the naira to investors is widening due to a tight supply of dollars in the market, traders said on Thursday, suggesting the currency is coming under international pressure even as government finances improve. A Nigerian diplomat was found dead in his home in the Sudanese capital Khartoum on Thursday, two security sources said. They said police were investigating the incident but provided no details on how he died. Officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Khartoum were not immediately available to comment. A 21-year-old university student, Opemiposi Okunuga, who allegedly stole his neighbour’s car and resold it, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
