Transparency International has described the $670 million shared between the federal and state governments of Nigeria as the vehicle for corruption. On Monday, the anti-corruption group said that Nigeria’s government has in the run-up to elections expanded the use of opaque $670 million-a-year funds to fuel graft. The funds, known as “security votes”, are a relic of military rule, mainly disbursed in hard cash and nominally released for dealing with unexpected security issues. Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun has explained that the Nigerian government has saved over N100 billion on travel and transport and on office stationeries in two years. Adeosun explained that the savings was initiated through the creation of the Efficiency Unit (E-Unit), set up in November 2015, six months after President Buhari was sworn-in and about two weeks after Adeosun assumed office as Finance Minister.
