Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Nigeria Democratic Congress’ presidential candidate for the 2027 election, has expressed sympathy for Lagos State citizens who have been affected by flooding.

In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Atiku expressed concern about the flooding’s impact on families, commuters, motorists, and business owners.

“I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the people of Lagos who have been affected by the ongoing flooding. My thoughts are with the families, motorists, commuters, business owners, and everyone whose lives and livelihoods were disrupted by this unfortunate event,” he said.

The former vice president said the tragedy emphasized the need for solidarity during difficult times. He also prayed for the safety of all impacted and a swift return to normalcy.

“At moments like this, we are reminded of the strength of our shared humanity and the importance of standing together in support of one another.

“I pray for the safety of all, for a swift return to normalcy,” Atiku added.

The message comes as parts of Lagos, including Gbagada, Iyana Ipaja, Ikorodu Road, Ikeja, Maryland, Mushin, Ogudu, Lekki, Oshodi, Agege, Alimosho, and Obalende, are experiencing flash floods due to torrential rains that began on Sunday.

The flooding affected sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, and Lekki-Epe Expressway, causing traffic gridlock throughout the state.

Authorities have blamed the outage on overburdened drainage systems during heavy downpours.
