The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended the plan by Governor Umo Eno to defect to the party, describing it as a prudent and strategic move.

Iniobong John, Director General of the party’s Media Network, issued the statement on Saturday in Uyo, the state capital.

The governor confirmed the defection rumour, which had been spreading on social media, on Thursday during the last State Executive Council meeting, when he told his commissioners to defect or quit.

“Anybody who claims he is not aware of my intention to leave the PDP is still living in the 18th century.

“Apart from elected officials like House of Assembly members and local government chairmen, I have nothing to negotiate with you.

“Let me tell you, anybody who believes that when I leave the PDP, he will use the party structure to fight me, is lying because I will still control the PDP structure,” the governor told his commissioners.

According to John, the governor’s planned defection to the APC is necessary to connect the state to the national power centre, allowing for significant progress.

He also added that the move to the APC will also foster collaboration between the governor and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, leading to democratic dividends for the state.

John said, “APC Media Network views Governor Umo Eno’s decision to join our party as a wise and strategic move. His leadership and experience would be invaluable assets to our party.

“Akwa Ibom State’s integration into the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is crucial for its development. With Governor Eno’s potential defection, the state would be reconnected to the central government, paving the way for meaningful progress.

“In collaboration with Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Governor Eno would be instrumental in attracting essential democracy dividends from the Federal Government to benefit the people of Akwa Ibom.

“A notable example is the much-anticipated Ibom Deep Seaport project, which is expected to become a reality before the end of 2031.

“As the gubernatorial candidate of our great party, Governor Eno’s re-election would be a foregone conclusion. We extend a warm welcome to him, assuring him that our party is safe, well-structured, and fully prepared to take him and his entourage to their desired destination, driving progress and development in Akwa Ibom State.

“We look forward to identifying with his exemplary leadership and working together for the state’s growth.”

He also called on party officers and members in the state to extend a warm welcome to the PDP members joining the party.

“Let us receive them with open arms, embracing their newfound commitment to our party’s ideals. Together, we can build a stronger, more united APC, driving progress and prosperity for all in Akwa Ibom State,” he added.
