    Angelique Kidjo beat Burna Boy to claim her fourth Grammy Award

    African music legend Angelique Kidjo has claimed her fourth Grammy Awards fending off competition from Nigeria music star, Burna Boy.

    The 62nd annual Grammy Awards which held at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles on Sunday night opened with tribute for basketball star, Kobe Bryant who died in a helicopter crash Sunday morning.

    Kidjo who was nominated in the Best World Music category for her album, Celia, beat Burna who was nominated for his album African Giant.

    Others nominated in their category include Altin Gun (Gece), Bokante & Metropole Orkest conducted by Jules Buckley (What Heat) and Nathalie Joachim with Spektral Quartet (Fanm D’Ayiti).

    • Grammys ceremony opens with tribute to Kobe Bryant

    In her acceptance speech, Kidjo celebrated the new generation of African artistes.

    “Four years ago on this stage, I was telling you that the new generations of artists coming from Africa gonna take you by storm and the time has come,” Kidjo said.

    Burna Boy, 28, joins the long list of Nigerians with just Grammy nominations like King Sunny Ade, Babatunde Olatunji, Seun Kuti, Femi Kuti, Wizkid, Timaya and Kah Lo.
