Air Canada has announced plans to begin scheduled flights to Lagos in 2027 following the expansion of the air transport agreement between Nigeria and Canada.

The airline said it welcomed the Canadian government’s announcement of the revised agreement and has started seeking the regulatory approvals required to commence commercial operations to Nigeria.

Mary-Jane Lorette, Air Canada’s vice-president of revenue management, partnerships and international affairs, said the carrier is preparing to launch the new route next year.

“We welcome this expanded Air Transport Agreement and look forward to obtaining the necessary government approvals to begin service to Lagos, Nigeria in the coming year,” Lorette said.

The announcement follows the signing of an expanded air transport agreement between Nigeria and Canada, which permits direct scheduled air services between the two countries.

A key provision of the agreement allows both nations to designate multiple airlines to operate scheduled flights, paving the way for increased competition and improved connectivity.

Canada’s Minister of Transport, Steven MacKinnon, said the agreement would strengthen economic ties while creating more travel options.

“The newly expanded Canada-Nigeria Air Transport Agreement will strengthen our economic ties, support tourism and trade, and make it easier for people and businesses in both countries to connect,” he said.

Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, said the deal responds to long-standing calls for better air connectivity from Canadians of Nigerian descent.

“I have met many Canadians of Nigerian descent who have long called for greater connectivity between Canada and Nigeria, and I know more flight options will be welcome news.

“Nigeria is one of Africa’s largest economies. A direct connection to Lagos brings Canadian exporters closer to that market while also bringing families, communities, and partners closer together.”

Air Canada said details of flight schedules, frequencies and aircraft types will be announced later, noting that operations remain subject to regulatory approvals and the completion of operational requirements in Nigeria.
