Nigeria was on Wednesday thrown into darkness following another collapse of the national power grid.

Chronicle NG reports that since January 2024 to date, the grid has collapsed 11 times.

Within a one-week period in October, the grid collapsed three times with its attendant blackouts, sparking reactions from Nigerians.

According to a tweet via the official handle of Nigeria’s national grid, it collapsed at about 2:09 pm on Wednesday.

“The major grid setback has occurred, and the restoration is to commence,” the tweet read.

However, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has promised a backup or buffer system to ensure that Nigerians won’t be thrown into blackout whenever the national grid collapses.

TCN Managing Director, Sule Abdulaziz, told Channels TV.

He blamed aged infrastructure as old as 50 years for the frequent national grid collapses in the country.

Abdulaziz said, “Presently, we are doing the scatter system for the whole network, and it is funded by the World Bank, and the project will take two years to be completed, and now, we have done 70% of the project.

“Almost a month ago, we were at Gwagwalada (in Abuja) with the World Bank, where we celebrated the project. It is 70 percent completed. Once we have the scatter system, it will reduce the frequency of getting system disturbances.”
