Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed the state’s Attorney General to challenge in court the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) freezing of a state government account.

The governor issued the directive in response to the anti-graft agency’s restriction on an Osun State Government account held at First Bank.

Adeleke, speaking to journalists at Government House in Osogbo, branded the action as a violation of the rule of law and requested an explanation from EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede on the reasoning behind the decision.

He urged Nigerians and people of Osun State to pay attention to the situation, calling it a public concern.

“All I ask is for the EFCC chairman to explain to the good people of Osun State and Nigerians in general why he froze the Osun State Government account and provide evidence to support whatever reason he presents.

“This and other actions being taken against Osun State are turning our democracy into a huge joke,” Adeleke said.

The governor further stated that he had asked the attorney general to file a suit in the Federal High Court in Osogbo to oppose the move.

The EFCC had previously placed the account, which was apparently used to pay workers’ salaries, under a “Post No Debit” restriction.

As of the time of filing this report, the commission had not publicly stated the rationale for the restriction.
