Leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the South-South have unanimously endorsed the 2027 presidential ambition of Rotimi Amaechi.

The endorsement was announced on Friday by John Odigie-Oyegun, former governor of Edo State, during the ADC South-South leaders’ consultative meeting in Benin City.

Oyegun said Amaechi formally notified regional leaders of his intention to contest the presidency under the ADC platform.

“We are glad that our son, Rotimi Amaechi, took advantage of this meeting to brief us formally of his intention to run for the presidency of our great nation,” Oyegun said.

“I can report that a unanimous decision was taken to give him all the support that he needs in pursuit of his ambition.”

    One-Term Pledge and Zoning Argument

In July 2025, Amaechi declared he would be willing to serve only one term if he secures the ADC ticket and wins the 2027 presidential election.

The former minister of transportation has also urged the party to consider zoning its presidential ticket to the South. He argued that the region should complete its eight-year tenure before power rotates back to the North.

According to Amaechi, presenting a northern candidate at a time when many southerners believe power should remain in the region could weaken the ADC’s appeal across the South.

“I will support whoever emerges,” he had said earlier this month. “But I also advise the ADC to look around and identify the best material that can convince Nigerians that things will be turned around.”

    2027 Race Takes Shape

Amaechi’s declaration and the South-South endorsement signal early momentum within the ADC ahead of the 2027 general election. The debate over zoning and regional balance is expected to intensify as political alignments solidify in the coming months.

With South-South leaders now firmly behind him, Amaechi’s 2027 presidential bid has entered a decisive phase within the party’s internal consultations.
