Ghanaian actor-turned-politician John Dumelo has won a seat in parliament, representing the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.
Dumelo, contesting on the platform of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), won the 2024 Ghana general elections on Saturday with 40,561 votes.
He beat incumbent Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who earned 27,377 votes.
This victory comes after his near defeat to Alhassan in the 2020 elections. Dumelo, aged 40, expressed profound appreciation to his fans and promised to keep his campaign promises.
“The people of Ghana have been calling for change, and they’ve shown that if you don’t perform well or if you’re arrogant, they will vote you out,” he stated.
He added, “This is a valuable lesson for everyone. It’s not about money; it’s about the development of the people and addressing their needs.”
He also promised to work hard over the next four years to effect genuine change and steer Ghana in the right direction.
Dumelo’s acting career began in 1991, with the film Baby Thief. He has since appeared in a number of Ghollywood and Nollywood films, including Away Bus, The Game, Black Men Rock, One Night in Vegas, The King is Mine, and Four Play.
