The Nigerian Senate has rejected President Muhammadu Buhari’s nomination of Ibrahim Magu as Economic Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, chairman after stalling his confirmation on two occasions.

The Senate claimed that it rejected Magu after it received a security report. The details of the security report was not disclosed as at press time.

In a series on tweets on social media, the official Twitter account of the Red Chamber said: “Following the security report before it, Senate therefore rejected the confirmation of the Nomination of Mr. Ibrahim Magu as Chairman EFCC”

The Senate however confirmed the nomination of the other 4 members of the EFCC and referred them for further security screening.

The rejection of Magu is believed to be a political move by the senate that has been largely described as very ‘corrupt’.

Since Magu was named acting EFCC chairman, he has pursued high profile cases of corruption and has recovered billions of naira from corrupt public office holders including former ministers.
