Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku scored twice as Belgium beat Switzerland in Brussels to move top of Group A2 in the Nations League.

Lukaku’s first goal came after good work from right-back Thomas Meunier.

Switzerland equalised when substitute Mario Gavranovic reacted quickest to Nico Elvedi’s header following Xherdan Shaqiri’s deep free-kick.

But Lukaku won it late on, finishing off a well-worked move involving Dries Mertens and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

The victory takes Roberto Martinez’s side above Switzerland, who had started their Nations League campaign with a 6-0 win over Iceland.

Belgium reached the World Cup semi-finals this summer and their performances in Russia helped them go joint top of the FIFA world rankings, along with world champions France.

It looked as if they would be dropping two points at home when Gavranovic equalised in the 76th minute.

Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany then wasted a glorious chance by heading wide from six yards, before Lukaku shot over from the same distance.

But it did not matter as a lovely one-touch move involving Hazard, Lukaku and Mertens ended with Lukaku calmly finishing to give his country the win.

The only negative for Belgium was a hamstring injury suffered by ex-Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, with Celtic’s Dedryck Boyata coming on to join Kompany and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld in a back three.

Switzerland are in Nations League action again on Monday, 15 October with an away game in Iceland, before Belgium take on the Netherlands in a friendly on Tuesday.
