Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, (SERAP) has urged the United Nations to appoint a Special Rapporteur to Nigeria on corruption and human rights.

In a series of tweets on Saturday the organisation said the UN could address the issue at the UN Human Rights Council 39th Session scheduled for 10-28 September 2018 at the Palais des Nations, in Geneva, Switzerland.

SERAP reckoned that appointing a Special Rapporteur to Nigeria will give a louder voice to those suffering the most as a result of corruption.

“As the UN Human Rights Council meets at its 39th Session scheduled to be held 10-28 September 2018, member states should give a louder voice to those suffering the most as a result of corruption especially in Nigeria and other parts of Africa.

SERAP stated that the Special Rapporteur will have a hands-on assessment on the state of Nigeria and happenings across the country.

“We urge member states to appoint a Special Rapporteur on corruption and human rights who can undertake country visits encountering people facing corruption in their daily life especially in access to water, health, education and electricity services,” SERAP said.

“The Special Rapporteur would develop reports, share information with other special mechanisms and make recommendations to the Human Rights Council for effective and collaborative action,” SERAP added.

    Who is a Special Rapporteur?

A Special Rapporteur is an individual working on behalf of the UN within the scope of “special procedure” mechanisms who have a specific country or thematic mandate from the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The mandate by the UN has been to “examine, monitor, advise, and publicly report” on human rights problems through “activities undertaken by special procedures, including responding to individual complaints, psychological operations and manipulation via the controlled media and academia, conducting studies, providing advice on technical cooperation at the country level, and engaging in general promotional activities.
