OPay has explained how Nigerians can check their eligibility for the Federal Government’s monthly N50,000 cash relief programme, warning customers against fraudsters attempting to exploit the intervention.
The fintech company said only qualified beneficiaries would receive the financial support under the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI).
In a statement shared on its official X account on Tuesday, OPay disclosed that eligible customers would see a pop-up notification on their app homepage.
Customers who receive the notification are expected to click on it and follow the instructions to complete the next steps.
However, the company clarified that customers who cannot see the notification on their OPay applications are not eligible for the programme.
OPay also stressed that it does not determine beneficiaries’ eligibility, advising customers who require assistance to contact the NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.
OPay warns against N50,000 relief scams
The company cautioned Nigerians against fraudsters seeking to exploit the government’s cash support programme.
It emphasised that OPay would never request customers’ personal identification numbers (PINs) or one-time passwords (OTPs) to process relief payments.
The fintech company also warned customers against paying agents or clicking on unverified links claiming to offer access to the financial support.
According to OPay, customers should use only its official mobile application or the USSD code *955*20# to check their eligibility.
How to check eligibility for FG N50,000 relief
The Federal Government recently announced the commencement of monthly N50,000 payments to eligible vulnerable Nigerians under NERSI.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, announced the programme on October 30, explaining that the intervention was designed to support vulnerable households amid rising living costs.
Under the arrangement, beneficiaries will receive N50,000 monthly, with the programme subject to regular reviews.
The Federal Government is partnering with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure secure and transparent disbursement.
Beneficiaries are expected to receive an SMS requesting their consent before the money is transferred directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.
Approved providers and their eligibility-check USSD codes include ALAT by Wema: *945*23#, MoMo PSB: *671*0#, NairaGram: *726*00#, OPay: *955*20#, and Moniepoint: *557*327#
The humanitarian affairs minister also clarified that beneficiaries do not need to pay any application fee or register through agents to access the programme.
He urged Nigerians not to disclose their PINs or Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) to unauthorised persons and advised anyone uncertain about messages concerning the intervention to contact the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.
The government says the initiative is part of its efforts to provide financial assistance to vulnerable households across the country.
