The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has intensified its crackdown on illegal National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment, unauthorised data modification and extortion, following an enforcement operation that resulted in several arrests and the seizure of illegal registration equipment.
The operation, conducted by NIMC’s Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit (ICEU), targeted suspected illegal enrolment activities in Gwagwalada, Abuja, and other locations.
The commission said the exercise was part of ongoing efforts to eliminate unauthorised registration practices and unethical activities capable of undermining the integrity, security and credibility of Nigeria’s National Identity Management System.
NIMC warned that many challenges experienced by Nigerians with their NIN records result from bypassing official enrolment procedures and patronising unauthorised operators.
It stressed that initial NIN enrolment can only be conducted at centres approved by the commission, while eligible personal data modifications should be processed through its official self-service platform.
NIMC Warns Against Illegal NIN Operators
The commission also advised existing NIN holders to download the NINAuth application, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
According to NIMC, the application provides security benefits, including NIN protection and the ability to print NIN slips.
The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reiterated the commission’s zero tolerance for extortion and unethical conduct.
She reaffirmed NIMC’s commitment to providing seamless and hitch-free enrolment services for Nigerians and legal residents.
In a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, Dr Kayode Adegoke, on Monday, the commission urged applicants and existing NIN holders to use only approved channels for enrolment and other related services.
How to Access Official NIN Services
NIMC advised members of the public to verify information and access legitimate services through its official website, www.nimc.gov.ng, or its verified social media platforms.
For enquiries and complaints, the commission provided a toll-free telephone line: 0800 0616 462.
The commission urged Nigerians to avoid unauthorised enrolment centres and use approved channels to protect their personal information and prevent problems associated with illegal NIN registration.
