Brighton crushed their rivals Crystal Palace on Sunday with Diego Gomez producing a spectacular goal from the halfway line.
The Seagulls were already 1-0 up thanks to Jaydee Canvot’s headed own goal in the fourth minute, and three minutes later Gomez netted one of the goals of the season.
Olivier Boscagli dispossessed Adam Wharton, and 23-year-old Paraguay midfielder Gomez, noticing away goalkeeper Walter Benitez off his line, decided to shoot.
Benitez raced back and made a desperate dive, but the ball flew in just beneath the crossbar.
Data provider Opta reported that the goal was struck from 51 meters out, making it the longest-range Premier League goal since Wayne Rooney scored from 58 m in Everton’s 4-0 victory over West Ham in November 2017.
Things got even worse for Palace when Yasin Ayari made it 3-0 after just 10 minutes, latching onto Charalampos Kostoulas’ backheel and firing past Benitez.
Kostoulas added a fourth four minutes into the second half, finishing into the net after Ayari’s shot deflected into his path.
Substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta, back after nearly two months out with a hamstring injury, struck the crossbar for Palace, and Jefferson Lerma headed against the post.
However, Brighton grabbed a fifth goal in the 84th minute when Jack Hinshelwood converted from close range after Benitez had parried Luka Vuskovic’s header.
It gave Brighton their biggest win over Palace since 1956, their eighth clean sheet in all competitions in 2026-27, and their fifth Premier League victory of an outstanding campaign.
The result also lifts them into second place, though they will drop back a spot if Arsenal win at Nottingham Forest in Sunday’s later match.
