An “incident” on a roller coaster at a theme park in the US state of Georgia on Monday left one person dead and several others injured, officials reported.
Authorities did not say how the person died or how the others were injured during the incident at Six Flags Over Georgia.
Lisa Cupid, chairwoman of Cobb County, said detectives from the county’s major crimes unit were looking into what took place.
Cupid stated that one person had died and others were injured, and she added that next of kin had been informed.
“A terrible tragedy occurred today at Six Flags Over Georgia,” Cupid said in a statement.
“I cannot imagine the horror the patrons and employees witnessed today, and my heart aches for the family who lost a loved one,” she said.
A Six Flags spokesperson informed US media that the park and local authorities acted right away and that they were fully cooperating with local officials.
Authorities did not say which ride was involved in the Georgia incident, but local media identified it as the Goliath roller coaster.
According to the park’s website, the roller coaster hits top speeds of 70 miles per hour (113 kmh) and reaches heights of 200 feet (61 meters).
This incident follows Six Flags’ decision last month to permanently close a popular roller coaster at its California theme park after dozens of people said they had suffered brain damage while riding it.
