The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has appointed Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer.
From October 2023 through September 2026, Dangut held the position of Head of the Nigeria National Office.
In a Thursday statement issued by Demianus G. Ojijeogu, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters in Accra, the Council announced that Dangut, a Nigerian, will serve a five-year term running from October 2026 to September 2031. He takes over from Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia.
Council, WAEC’s international governing board, approved his appointment at its 74th Annual Meeting, which took place in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026. On October 1, 2026, he took office as the 14th Registrar to the Council.
Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production (1991), a Master of Science in Animal Science (1994), a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science (2017), and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning (2020).
His career in education started in 1994 at St. Louis College, Jos, where he worked as a WAEC examiner before joining the Council in 1998.
A skilled test developer and administrator, he has held a range of roles, among them Assistant Registrar, Test Development Division, Ogba, Lagos; Head of Examinations Security and Deputy Branch Controller, Uyo and Bauchi; Branch Controller, Yola; Controller, Post-Examinations Department; Zonal Coordinator, Ikeja; and Deputy Registrar, Head of National Office.
With more than twenty years of experience, Dangut is known for using information and communications technology to enhance test development, administration, and post-test activities.
As Head of the National Office, he drove major innovations, such as the introduction of Computer-Based WASSCE, the serialization of question papers, and the launch of a Digital Electronic Marking System.
He also supervised the Digital Certificate Portal, the WAEC E-Study Platform, the Digital Records Archive, and systems for examination logistics and monitoring of examiners.
Over the course of his career, he earned commendation from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for the way he handled examination matters between 2000 and 2006, along with an Award for Meritorious Service from the Ondo State Government during his NYSC year.
He has sat on the boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, NERDC, the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, JUPEB, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, and the Grange Educational Foundation, and he represented WAEC at the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.
Dangut has published in international and national journals and has delivered papers at a number of conferences. He currently serves as the Regional Representative of the West African Sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa, AEAA.
He is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management, NIM.
