The Ghanaian Ministry of Gender has launched the Marrify app, a digital platform designed to help prospective couples verify their partner’s marital status before getting married.
The official launch ceremony was held recently in Ghana, with Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the country’s Minister of Gender, in attendance.
The Marrify app was launched in collaboration with MarryRight, an agency specialising in family law and marriage.
Speaking at the event, Lartey said the application was an important step towards ensuring relationships are built on respect, integrity and accountability while helping to prevent gender-based violence.
She said the launch gives couples an opportunity to approach marriage with greater awareness and responsibility.
“It is a reminder of the need to uphold the highest standard of integrity and accountability,” she said.
“You would not have to take a person’s word for it, even in the most trusted relationship. You can verify with this app. And then again, when making a decision on the venue, who has to officiate the marriage, where it is officiated, the officiant, and the status of the one you are getting married to.”
Lartey said prospective couples should verify critical details before taking the step into marriage.
“These are the critical issues we need to ponder over, verify and be sure of before taking the needed step,” she said.
“As a ministry, we’ve used our platform to promote the app and engage with our stakeholders and potential beneficiaries. To ensure that Ghanaians live in awareness. So that you do not invest for so many years, resources and find out that all the investment has gone in vain.”
Meanwhile, Dennis Adei Dwomoh, founder of the Marrify App and the Marriage Governance Conference, raised concerns about marriage data management in Ghana.
The legal practitioner claimed that “80% of Ghanaians who are married have not registered their marriage.”
The Marrify platform is intended to give prospective couples another way to verify a partner’s marital status before making a legal commitment.
