Francis Fadahunsi, senator representing Osun East Senatorial District, has asked his supporters to monitor how voters cast their ballots in Ilesa.
Fadahunsi, an All Progressives Congress (APC) senator, made the remarks on Saturday at Polling Unit 001, NUD Primary School, a collation centre in Ilase-Ijesa, where voting was ongoing in the Osun governorship election.
In a Facebook post by Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, Fadahunsi was seen speaking in Yoruba and instructing his supporters to monitor the voting patterns of individual voters.
“Look at where each person voted. Look at the vote of each person,” Fadahunsi said.
“Anybody who does not vote for the right party in Ilesa is not an indigene of Ilesa.”
The comment comes three days after the Osun State Police Command summoned Fadahunsi over a viral video in which he was heard directing supporters to “kill” members of Accord, the political party of Ademola Adeleke, the state governor.
Fadahunsi later said the comment had been taken out of context, adding that he meant supporters should “kill Accord with votes” rather than resort to violence.
His remarks triggered widespread criticism and prompted the police invitation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the statement.
The police said the invitation followed allegations that the senator’s comments were threatening, inciting and intimidating in nature.
Fadahunsi subsequently appeared before the police and was released on bail, while maintaining that his remarks had been misrepresented.
