The presidency has issued a seven-week timeline for drafting the proposed state police bill.
Femi Gbajabiamila, chairman of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, said on Monday that the executive bill will be ready for President Bola Tinubu’s review on September 3, 2026.
In July, Tinubu inaugurated the presidential committee to prepare the legal framework for implementing state police across the country.
Speaking after the inaugural meeting of the presidential committee at the State House on Monday, Gbajabiamila said the approved timetable for drafting the state police bill runs from July 27, 2026, to September 14, 2026.
He said the administrative and technical preparations for the proposed bill have commenced, adding that the executive bill will be presented to Tinubu by September 3.
He noted that after Tinubu’s approval, a national consultation will begin on the draft bill, after which it will be transmitted to the National Assembly.
“The approved work programme is a seven-week, milestone-driven exercise running from July 27 to September 14, 2026,” Gbajabiamila said.
“The resulting Executive Bill package is scheduled for presentation to the President on September 3.
“Subject to his approval, a national consultation on the completed draft will follow, after which the text and supporting materials will be revised and prepared for formal transmission to the National Assembly.
“The timetable is demanding, but it is not a shortcut.”
