The Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ), University of Ibadan, has congratulated one of its most distinguished alumni and former president, Mr Laolu Akande, on receiving the 2026 Voice of Truth Award, describing the honour as a fitting recognition of his lifelong commitment to ethical journalism, truth and public service.
In a statement jointly signed by the union’s President, Adebumowa Jesutomiwo, and General Secretary, Olajide Tikristi, the student journalists said the award reflects Akande’s unwavering dedication to truth, public accountability, courageous reporting and principled journalism.
According to the union, the recognition is a testament to a distinguished career defined by integrity and professionalism.
“This prestigious honour is a testament to your unwavering commitment to truth, ethical journalism, public accountability and courageous reporting. Throughout your remarkable career, you have consistently exemplified the values that define responsible journalism, inspiring generations of journalists within and beyond Nigeria,” the statement read.
The union noted that Akande’s remarkable journey from campus journalism at the University of Ibadan to becoming a respected journalist, editor, public affairs analyst and national figure continues to inspire aspiring journalists across Nigeria.
It further stated: “From your days in the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan, to your outstanding contributions as a journalist, editor, public affairs analyst and national figure, you have demonstrated that integrity remains the greatest currency of the journalism profession. Your dedication to factual reporting and principled public engagement continues to set the standard for journalists across the country.”
Expressing pride in Akande’s accomplishments, the union said his achievements continue to bring honour not only to the Union of Campus Journalists but also to the University of Ibadan and Nigeria.
“As members of the Union you once led, we are immensely proud that your achievements continue to bring honour not only to our Union but also to the University of Ibadan and Nigeria. Your recognition reaffirms that excellence, consistency and courage never go unnoticed.”
The union added that Akande’s latest recognition has strengthened its resolve to preserve the ideals upon which it was founded and to continue promoting responsible journalism.
“Your achievement fills every member of UCJ UI with immense pride and further strengthens our resolve to preserve the ideals upon which this Union was founded. We celebrate this remarkable milestone with you and look forward to your continued contributions to journalism and nation-building. May your voice continue to illuminate the truth, inspire excellence and shape the future of ethical journalism.”
Praying for greater accomplishments, the union expressed hope that the award would be one of many more honours to come.
“We pray that this milestone will be one of many more recognitions as you continue to uphold the ideals of truth, justice and responsible journalism.”
The statement concluded with a message of appreciation to the former UCJ UI president.
“Congratulations once again, Sir. Thank you for remaining a shining light and an enduring inspiration to every campus journalist and to all of us at UCJ UI.”
Akande, who served as the second President of the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan, during the 1988/1989 academic session, is an accomplished journalist, editor, public affairs analyst, former presidential spokesperson, and anchor of Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television.
He recently received the 2026 Voice of Truth Award at the inaugural U.S.-Nigeria Faith Heroes Award Gala, organised by Save Nigeria Group USA in partnership with the U.S.-Nigeria Civil Society Coalition.
The event, held at the Hilton Garden Inn Washington DC/U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., recognised his unwavering commitment to factual, courageous and principled journalism, particularly through his work on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande and his longstanding contributions to ethical journalism and public discourse.
