Badenoch celebrates Starmer’s resignation, calls him ‘terrible’ PM

British Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has launched a harsh attack on Prime Minister Keir Starmer following his announcement that he would resign as Labour leader after less than two years in power.

Starmer announced his resignation on Monday in an emotional speech outside 10 Downing Street, adding that his judgements had always been driven by what he thought was best for the country.

“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” Starmer said.

He also stated that he would remain prime minister until a new Labour leader is elected, with the process expected to begin in July and conclude before Parliament returns from its summer recess in September.

In reaction to the announcement, Badenoch blamed Starmer’s record in government for his downfall and accused the Labour administration of pursuing damaging policies.

In a statement on X, she wrote, “Hiking national insurance; the Family Farm Tax; giving up on real welfare reform; not funding our defence; not drilling our own oil and gas; appointing Peter Mandelson…then lying about what had happened. Britain is not ungovernable.

“Keir Starmer is a terrible prime minister. But the problem isn’t just Starmer. Labour MPs only want higher taxes to hand out more benefits, as the welfare secretary has pointed out.

“These are Labour’s choices and their values, regardless of who is running the party. We need to get Britain working again. We need the @Conservatives.”
