Liverpool clinch Champions League spot in Salah’s last match

Liverpool secured a spot in next season’s Champions League despite drawing with Brentford, as Anfield bid farewell to club legends Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.

This sason has been incredibly disappointing for the previous Premier League champions, and on a heartfelt day, they once again couldn’t maintain their advantage after taking the lead.

However, as they bid farewell to two legends, Liverpool successfully obtained the point required to secure fifth position—and a place in the Champions League.

The outcome indicates that Brentford concluded the season with only one victory in 10 top-level matches, resulting in their failure to qualify for Europe for the first occasion.

All attention was on Salah and Robertson, who were playing in their 442nd and 275th matches, respectively, after nine years of dedication.

Reds manager Arne Slot chose to begin with Salah even after the winger’s contentious social media statement following the loss to Aston Villa nine days prior, where the Egyptian seemed to take aim at the head coach.

Salah nearly achieved the perfect farewell he desired as he bent a free-kick in the 19th minute around the Brentford wall. Instead of finding the net, the ball struck the post.

Salah recorded his 120th assist for Liverpool, setting up Curtis Jones to score in front of the Kop in the 58th minute.

However, Liverpool’s advantage lasted just over five minutes as Kevin Schade, who had previously been thwarted by an excellent stop from the returning Alisson, equalized.

Liverpool endured a few tense moments in the second half following Salah’s emotional substitution in the 74th minute.

Robertson received a standing ovation when he was substituted in the 83rd minute, and after the match, Salah returned to the field, appearing visibly upset as The Kop chanted his name.

This marked the conclusion of the Liverpool journey for Salah and Robertson, two unique players who triumphed in England and Europe while donning the iconic red jersey.

On a touching afternoon in Merseyside, supporters chanted their names continuously and showcased mosaics celebrating both, while the matchday program was devoted to their accomplishments.

Just hours before the match began, supporters donning shirts with Salah and Robertson’s names arrived at the venue, some sporting plastic crowns in tribute to Salah, the ‘Egyptian king.’

Some appeared as ancient Egyptian pharaohs, while a sign on The Kop declared ‘Salah Is Our King.’

As Liverpool’s number 11 prepared to curl a free-kick around the Brentford wall, spectators rose from their seats, believing it would score.

Instead, it rattled against the post, and Salah responded with a hop, skip, and jump in annoyance.

Salah did create a pivotal moment in the match, as his pass assisted Jones in scoring.

Liverpool could not maintain their advantage, and then came the moment when Salah departed the field for the last time in a Liverpool jersey.

Following warm embraces from numerous teammates, he dropped to all fours, kissed the Anfield ground, and then he left.

Robertson also received a standing ovation and was surrounded by teammates when he was substituted for Milos Kerkez.

Upon returning full-time, both players re-entered the pitch and received a guard of honor, embracing former Liverpool player and manager Sir Kenny Dalglish along with Ian Rush, the club’s leading scorer of all time.

Brentford nearly secured victory in the final moments but fell short of European qualification due to goal difference against Brighton, despite the Seagulls suffering a 3-0 defeat at home to Manchester United.

Brentford and Brighton both ended with 53 points. The Seagulls concluded at plus six, three ahead of what the Bees achieved.

There will be regret that they fell just short of joining Bournemouth in Europe for the first time.

However, it will not be overlooked how effectively Brentford have played under Keith Andrews’ initial season as manager.

Predicted by many to be relegated at the beginning of the season, the Bees have much to feel positive about following impressive victories against Aston Villa, Manchester United, and Liverpool.
