Nigerian media personality, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, has shared details about his past smoking addiction and how he eventually quit after years of struggling with it.
Speaking on a recent episode of ‘MENtality’ alongside Banky W and Aproko Doctor, Ebuka said he started smoking while he was in JSS3.
According to him, the habit continued for 13 years and became heavier after he gained admission to the university.
“I started smoking in JSS3. I smoked for 13 years. By the time I entered university, I was smoking two packs a day. I was a heavy smoker,” he recalled.
Ebuka explained that he later made conscious efforts to quit smoking and eventually overcame the addiction.
During the discussion, Olubankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, also opened up about his struggle with pornography addiction. He said the problem started while trying to avoid promiscuity.
“I was trying to battle pornography and decided that instead of moving from woman to woman, I should just watch pornography,” he said.
Reacting further, Ebuka noted that many people often replace one addiction with another while trying to overcome unhealthy habits.
On his part, Aproko Doctor said many addictions are linked to people trying to escape emotional pain or stress.
“Human beings have two ambitions. The first is to avoid pain. The second is to chase pleasure. A lot of drug use happens because many people are trying to avoid pain,” he said.
The trio also stressed the importance of self-awareness and discipline in dealing with addiction and unhealthy behaviours.
