England defender Harry Maguire stated on Thursday he was “shocked and gutted” to be left out of Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup team.
The German coach will choose his 26-man roster for the North American competition on Friday, and he began calling players the day before.
Manchester United’s Maguire was named to the England team in March, his first call-up under Tuchel, but the 66-cap defender has stated he will not be attending the World Cup.
The 33-year-old center-back wrote on social media: “I was confident I could have played a major role for my country this summer after the season I’ve had.” The choice has left me startled and gutted.
“I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years.
“I wish the players all the best this summer.”
Maguire has played an important part for United since Michael Carrick took over at Old Trafford in January, helping the club finish third in the Premier League.
Tuchel announced a 26-man England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making major headlines by omitting high-profile stars like Phil Foden, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw in favor of in-form domestic talents like Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly.
The official squad selection for the tournament includes the following key players:
- Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, James Trafford.
- Defenders: Reece James, Tino Livramento, John Stones, Marc Guéhi, Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn, Nico O’Reilly, Lewis Hall.
- Midfielders: Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Kobbie Mainoo, Jordan Henderson, Elliot Anderson, Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, Adam Wharton.
- Forwards: Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Anthony Gordon, Noni Madueke, Marcus Rashford, Jarrod Bowen, Ollie Watkins.
