Dr. Edwin Emegakor, the Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital in Nkpor, Anambra State, has been released from captivity after being kidnapped on May 7.
His release was confirmed by the chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, Anambra State Branch, Dr. Princeton Okam, in Awka, on Sunday.
Emegakor was abducted on the evening of May 7 after attending to patients by unidentified gunmen alleged to be in security uniforms.
Chronicle NG gathered that the security operatives at the hospital, medical personnel, and other workers within the facility were surrendered at gunpoint and their phones confiscated during the abduction.
In response to the news, members of the Anambra State branch of the Nigeria Medical Association threatened to go on indefinite strike beginning Monday if their member was not released within 48 hours.
The association made the demand in a communiqué released following its Emergency General Meeting on Saturday.
However, Dr. Princeton Okam, Chairman of the NMA, Anambra Branch, who was scheduled to address journalists on Sunday about the strike action that was set to begin on Monday, thanked God for the medical doctor’s release.
