The Federal Government has reaffirmed its Nigeria press freedom pledge ahead of the 2027 elections, promising stronger protections for journalists and a safer working environment.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance in Abuja during an inter-ministerial briefing marking World Press Freedom Day 2026.

The event, themed “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” brought together security agencies, media leaders and other stakeholders to discuss safeguarding journalists ahead of the next election cycle.

Idris said a free and responsible press remains central to democratic governance, stressing that credible information and accountability are vital to national development.

He added that the administration of Bola Tinubu is committed to ensuring journalists can operate without fear.

The minister said the government does not support intimidation, harassment or attacks against media professionals carrying out lawful duties.

However, he warned that the rapid spread of misinformation, disinformation and manipulated content—fuelled by digital platforms and artificial intelligence—poses a growing threat to democracy.

Idris said Nigeria is working with UNESCO to tackle these challenges, including plans to establish a media and information centre in Abuja to combat fake news and promote media literacy.

Looking ahead to 2027, he emphasised the critical role of the media in ensuring credible and peaceful elections, urging journalists to uphold accuracy, fairness and professionalism.

He noted that irresponsible reporting and harmful narratives could undermine democratic processes.

The minister also highlighted efforts to improve access to public information through the Freedom of Information Act and investments in government-owned media platforms.

He added that reforms are underway at the National Press Centre in Abuja to strengthen engagement between the government and the media.

Also speaking, Director-General of the Department of State Services, Oluwatosin Ajayi, said press freedom must be balanced with national security.

He stressed that while transparency is essential, certain operations require confidentiality to protect lives and national interests.

Ajayi called for stronger collaboration between security agencies and the media through regular briefings and improved communication.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, represented by Force Public Relations Officer Anthony Okon Placid, reaffirmed the police commitment to protecting journalists.

He said attacks on media practitioners would not be tolerated and promised that violations would be investigated and prosecuted.

World Press Freedom Day, marked annually on May 3, celebrates media freedom, assesses global conditions for journalism and honours journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
