Troops of the 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have dealt a heavy blow to armed groups in Katsina State, killing four suspected terrorist commanders during a fierce encounter on Friday.

The operation, which took place along the Turare–Yantumaki road, saw soldiers repel an ambush and swiftly turn the tide against their attackers.

According to the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasir Muazu, the troops were on a fighting patrol when they came under attack around 11:40 a.m. The soldiers responded decisively, pursuing and neutralising all four assailants without suffering any casualties.

Authorities identified the slain suspects as Bishir Holami, Jamilu Baki, Ibrahim Doro, and Abdurraman Maje — figures believed to be behind a string of deadly raids across several communities.

They were reportedly linked to coordinated attacks in Gobirawa, Raddawa, and Kuki, as well as other parts of Dutsinma and Matazu local government areas.

Security forces recovered an AK-47 rifle with ammunition, two motorcycles, multiple mobile phones, and ₦153,400 in cash from the scene. Investigators say some of the seized phones contain images of the suspects dressed in military-style gear, and the devices have been sent for forensic analysis.

Officials say the operation strikes at the network of a notorious terrorist leader, Muhammadu Fulani, who has been blamed for terrorising parts of Matazu, Musawa, Charanchi, and Kankia.

The state government described the development as a major operational success and a sign that ongoing offensives are yielding results.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s administration reiterated its commitment to eliminating terrorism, assuring residents that security forces will sustain pressure on criminal groups.

Residents were also urged to remain vigilant and continue sharing credible intelligence, which authorities say has played a key role in recent gains.
