A member of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) task force has been shot dead during a confrontation with security personnel over a vehicle seizure operation in Abuja.
The incident occurred on Friday in the busy Wuse 2 district, along Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, sparking panic and tension among residents and passersby.
Eyewitnesses said the deceased was part of a task force team attempting to impound a vehicle when a dispute broke out with its occupants, reportedly accompanied by unidentified security operatives.
According to accounts, the confrontation began at a traffic light after the vehicle was stopped. The driver allegedly protested that an object had been placed under his car, preventing him from moving.
Witnesses claimed the situation escalated when the task force officials insisted the driver either produce vehicle documents or make payment before being allowed to leave.
During the standoff, one of the security operatives allegedly fired warning shots into the air. Moments later, he reportedly shot a task force member at close range, killing him instantly.
The shooting triggered chaos at the scene, with those involved fleeing immediately after the incident.
Sources further alleged that the vehicle was part of a convoy carrying security personnel and foreign nationals at the time of the encounter.
The killing has heightened concerns among residents over the conduct of enforcement operations and the growing tension between task force officials and security agents in the capital.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, while the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
