Crystal Palace rallied from behind to defeat Newcastle United, with substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring a thrilling late double.

After William Osula’s first-half goal at Selhurst Park, the visitors appeared to be on their way to a much-needed victory.

However, Newcastle has dropped more points from winning positions (25) than any other Premier League team, as Crystal Palace rallied late on.

Newcastle breathed a sigh of relief when Jefferson Lerma’s header hit the crossbar, but the hosts ultimately equalized in the 80th minute.

Daniel Munoz broke forward down the right, and Tyrick Mitchell coolly hooked the defender’s cross back over to Mateta, who headed it down and into the net, leaving manager Oliver Glasner ecstatic on the touchline.

Eddie Howe, his opposite number, lowered his head, but the Newcastle manager’s day was about to go considerably worse.

In the first minute of stoppage time, Crystal Palace was given a penalty by referee Andy Madley when defender Sven Botman tugged Jefferson Lerma’s shirt inside the box.

The Crystal Palace manager turned to his outstanding bench midway through the second half, bringing on Adam Wharton, Ismaila Sarr, and Jean-Philippe Mateta, changing the outcome of the game.

The trio all played a role in the turnaround, but Mateta will undoubtedly get attention at the end of a fantastic week for the Crystal Palace forward.

Mateta not only ended his goal drought and delivered a devastating performance in Thursday’s 3-0 Europa Conference League quarter-final triumph against Fiorentina, but he also made an excellent cameo against Newcastle.

Crystal Palace will play the second leg of their European quarter-final against Fiorentina at the Artemio Franchi Stadium on Thursday, April 16 (20:00 GMT), before welcoming West Ham to Selhurst Park in the Premier League on Monday, April 20 (20:00 GMT).

Newcastle will play Bournemouth at St. James’ Park on Saturday, April 18 (15:00 GMT), followed by a week later against Arsenal on Saturday, April 25 (17:30 GMT).
