Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi State, is poised to formally defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside his supporters on Thursday, in what could deepen the crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The governor signalled the move on Tuesday while hosting key ADC figures, including Babachir Lawal, at the Government House in Bauchi.

His planned exit follows months of turmoil within the PDP, triggered by a disputed convention held in Ibadan in November 2025 by a faction led by Kabiru Turaki.

Mohammed said efforts to stabilise the party had failed despite multiple reconciliation attempts.

“We have found ourselves in a very serious situation. I have done everything possible to ensure reconciliation, but it has not worked,” he said.

The Bauchi governor revealed that exploratory talks were held across political platforms, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), but those options did not materialise.

“We discovered that we are not wanted there,” he added.

Mohammed described the ADC as the most viable opposition platform available, noting that consultations remain ongoing ahead of a final decision.

He disclosed that David Mark, now national chairman of the ADC, had formally invited him and his political allies to join the party following extensive discussions.

According to the governor, the move is being driven by mounting pressure from his political base and stakeholders, both at the state and national levels.

“We have to find a place within the opposition. That is where our fate and political destiny is taking us,” he said.

Mohammed stressed that consultations would be concluded by Thursday, when a formal announcement is expected after a meeting in Abuja.

He added that inclusivity and due diligence remain central to the process to avoid political missteps.

Despite the uncertainty, the governor maintained confidence in his political strength, insisting electoral victory ultimately depends on grassroots support rather than party structures.

“We believe in winning elections… we are not afraid of anyone,” he said.
