Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the deputy governor of Kano State, has resigned.

His spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu, informed the press on Friday that the resignation has been publicly announced.

“Yes, it is true. The deputy governor has resigned from his position,” he said, declining to provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the decision.

The resignation comes amid recent tensions between the deputy governor and the Kano State House of Assembly, despite the fact that no formal explanation has been provided.

In recent days, the Assembly had made a number of accusations against Gwarzo, including misconduct and issues pertaining to the performance of his official duties.

The lawmakers had also taken actions that observers described as a prelude to possible disciplinary action, raising concerns about an impending political crisis within the state executive arm.

The resignation also comes against the backdrop of recent political realignments in Kano following Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress.

Following the defection, the governor made a number of changes within the government, such as dismissing Abdullahi Musa, the head of service, in an attempt to reposition the civil service for greater efficiency and discipline.

Shehu Wada Sagagi, the Commissioner for Investment, Commerce, and Industry, was recently relieved of his position by the governor, who cited ongoing efforts to restructure government operations for better service delivery.

These moves, according to political experts, indicate a larger plan by the administration to solidify its place in the new political alignment and simplify administrative systems in accordance with its changing goals.

Although the details of the accusations against Gwarzo were still unclear, sources in the Assembly had suggested that the issue was being investigated by lawmakers prior to his resignation.

As of the time this article was filed, attempts to obtain additional explanation from the Kano State Government had failed.

Subject to the Kano State House of Assembly’s approval, Gwarzo’s resignation is anticipated to initiate constitutional procedures for the appointment of a new deputy governor.

According to analysts, the most recent development might further alter Kano’s political environment, especially as the state negotiates continuing alliances in advance of upcoming elections.
