Hafsatu Yusuf, a Kano woman who just delivered quintuplets at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, has died.
In a phone interview with PUNCH Online on Thursday, Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa, Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Ministry of Health, confirmed the news, stating that the woman died at the hospital about 2 a.m.
He said that the woman had prolonged bleeding after giving birth to the five babies — three boys and two girls — and that medical staff attempted but failed to stabilize her.
“She had been bleeding since after delivery, and all efforts by doctors to control the situation were unsuccessful,” he said.
K/Na’isa also stated that the deceased had since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites at her residence in Hotoro.
“We are appealing to the public to support the babies with milk and other essential items,” he said.
He did, however, confirm that the neonates are in stable condition and getting medical care at the hospital.
The incident comes barely a day after the Kano State Government announced that it had taken responsibility for the medical care of the mother and her babies following the delivery at the facility.
In a previous statement, the ministry stated that the quintuplets were successfully delivered and that both the mother and the newborns were given particular care by medical personnel.
The deceased’s husband, Malam Salisu Nufi’u, expressed gratitude to the state government for the intervention, calling it timely assistance.
The government also reaffirmed its commitment to improving mother and child health services and lowering death rates throughout the state.
